The antoniolupi showroom in Porta Tenaglia enlarges. The extensive space reworked by Calvi Brambilla for an important presence in an increasingly international city as Milan. At the crossroads between two choices: is how Andrea Lupi considers himself when telling us about the project to expand and redefine his showroom in Porta Tenaglia. The first option: the most physiological and natural option was to rethink the space in Porta Tenaglia through the creative and planning resources within the company. The second option: have professionals take the project in hand. Andrea Lupi has chosen this second option, entrusting the task to Fabio Calvi and Paolo Brambilla, design and interior professionals active on the design and fashion scene since 2006. A choice that Andrea Lupi defines as ‘enlightened’ in a twofold sense: the manner in which the studio has approached the request for collaboration as well as how the project was developed. “You do not need us” was the first reaction of Fabio and Paolo during their first visit of the showroom in Milan and Stabbia, but the will of antoniolupi was to go ‘beyond’ the habitual and to explore a different territory. Focusing on the particular shape of the space, an elegant tower from the 50s designed by the architects Baselli and Portaluppi, the architects decided to work on the architectural box of the showroom. The space that develops in length evokes the sequence of so many bathrooms that, one after the other, offer themselves to the eye to be admired, even from outside of the fourteen full-height windows. The new ceiling, made up of deliberately irregular architectural vaults and ‘hanging’ from the dark background, gives depth to the entire showroom. The arches deliberately do not coincide with the spaces nor the windows. A gesture of freedom compared to certain spatial symmetries. The project was born from a careful observation of the works of the great masters: in this case the inspiration came from the Kılıç Ali Paşa baths built in 1577 by Mimar Sinān, contemporary Ottoman architect of Michelangelo and Palladio. This hamam is part of the imposing complex of the Sultan Suleiman Mosque, called The Magnificent. A place designed centuries ago where you can restore the body and the spirit in a context of peculiar beauty and that over time also became a place of socializing, perfect to meet, to conclude business and make alliances. Based on this concept and on the consideration that the antoniolupi products are placed at floor level, Calvi and Brambilla focused on the upper part of the space, on the ceilings. The ceiling ‘had to’ give the project a completeness. However there is also references to authors of the Modern, from Johnson to Kahn, who worked above all on the architecture of museums and ceilings, as opposed to the works on display.

Calvi Brambilla, Showroom Antonio Lupi, Piazza Lega Lombarda, Milano, 2018. “When we were asked to design the new Antonio Lupi showroom, our attention was mainly focused on the particular shape of the space, located at the base of an elegant tower in the heart of Milan, built in the Fifties with the recommendations of the architect Portaluppi. It is a showroom with fourteen windows that from via Porta Tenaglia extends up to look out onto the greenery of Parco Sempione. We decided to work on inserting a ceiling of great visual impact, composed of irregular vaults that contribute to create a sense of depth to a space that develops mainly in length. The particular design, in addition to suggesting a sequence of bathrooms is designed to be admired from outside and to have a great visual impact at night. As it sometimes happens, this project is also born from the observation of the work of a great master: in this case the inspiration comes from the Kılıç Ali Paşa baths in Istanbul, designed by Sinān, a famous Ottoman architect of the sixteenth century. In this hamam there is a clear distinction between the lower portion, dedicated to the pools and fountains and the upper portion, composed of large vaults and domes full of light. In the same way, in this project dedicated to the bathroom, attention was focused on the upper part of the architecture, leaving greater freedom to the floor level where the products are exposed. However, there is no shortage of references to authors who have worked, above all in the architecture of museums, and ceilings, as opposed to the works on display. Finally we focused on the tactility of the surfaces, and we wanted to contrast the roughness of the walls covered in cement resin,the softness of the wood of the staircase leading to the lower level and especially the irregular grain of the Ceppo di Grè, typical stone of Milan.”

A wicker basket, a flower with a ringed corolla, a streamlined star that, thanks to a light breath, reveals an unexpected magic. The work of man meets nature to give life to Intreccio, the freestanding washbasin entirely made of marble, which plays on the relationship between lightness and solidity of the material used, on the balance between a sophisticated piece and an apparently natural form. Intreccio represents the natural evolution of the path undertaken more than a year ago by antoniolupi and Paolo Ulian, to investigate the relationship between an ancient material and new processing techniques. Iconic like the previous washbasins of the collection, dynamic, for the particular geometry of the concentric layers that are staggered when they are overlapped proceeding upwards, so as to determine a play of light and dark and full and empty obtained only by the variation of light on concave or convex shapes. In fact, Intreccio is born from a block of marble on which the cuts have been optimized to obtain all the parts necessary to create a three-dimensional volume. The numerical control machining technologies have allowed to obtain curvilinear and thin shapes, light, almost as if they were of another material and not of marble.

With Intreccio, the research of antoniolupi further investigates a topic that is of saving resources and materials. A single block of marble is divided into 4 from which 4 washbasins are made. The rings that make up Intreccio are concentric because they have to be obtained one inside the other from the block of marble drastically reducing the waste produced by the cut. Without forgetting lightness because weight has always been a significant factor in the production of marble products. Intreccio weighs “only” 55 kg. Lightness, technology that becomes an aesthetic expression and material savings summarize at best a project of great impact, an element which gives life to a composition of the elegant and contemporary bathroom.

The common thread between art and design is now a distinctive sign of antoniolupi’s work. More than fusion, we would refer to two different experiences mixed together to achieve a common goal: an univocal experience of beauty that becomes part of our daily life. Luca Galofaro, Architect and Teacher, has focused his attention on relationships between representation, urban architecture and image. An area of antoniolupi showroom La Pietra e il Fuoco in Stabbia is currently hosting an Exhibition/Architecture Drawing Collection curated by Galofaro himself: an important step forward in the company’s growth strategy. Now Galofaro ‘influences’ some antoniolupi products with his vision and the collaboration between him and Andrea Lupi is becoming even closer: some Architecture Drawings of the exhibition have been chosen to be used on antoniolupi mirrors. Transforming some of these works in real furniture objects was a natural consequence of the reflection shared by Galofaro and Andrea Lupi. 

The idea consists of transferring an image used to think of architecture to an item of everyday life, building a bridge between imagination, which dominates art, and life, normally dominated by the function of the object. The collage technique is based on overlapping fragments. The image comes from the stratification of images of memory. Mirrors are made overlapping printed glass plates, creating tridimensional collages. The last mirrored layer establishes a relationship with the observer, who becomes part of the image itself. “The Collage mirrors are born from a larger project that I’ve shared with Andrea Lupi in the past year. The construction of the Antonio Lupi architectural drawings collection. Some of my collages have become part of the collection. The idea of turning some of these works into furnishing objects was a natural consequence of our shared reflections. Transforming an image used to think about architecture into an object of use, a bridge between imagination and life.” (Luca Garofalo)

An intrusion of real world into imagination

Lightness and solidity, rigor and expressiveness, material and color. Poetry of opposites, the balance that arises from the superposition of geometric shapes, a perfect and proportional relationship between the parts. Albume is the freestanding washbasin designed by Carlo Colombo that alternates between a solid base that expresses strength and a transparent and colored basin that leaves water as the protagonist. A new transparent resin allows to create the basin of the sink, available in two different shapes that define a more slender image or on the contrary softer and welcoming.

The refined color contrasts between the upper part and the infinite variations of the marble used for the base allow you to customize the sink and give a specific character to the whole. Precisely in this sense, Albume fits perfectly into refined bathrooms, in which its materials harmonize with the surfaces and other elements of the composition of the space. The base made in Bianco Carrara or Nero Marquinia marble to give more elegance and prestige to a project and to dialogue with walls, floors or work surfaces.

A form that is born from the clever control of the disruptive force of the sign, a light volume that softly emerges from the wall to sinuously enter space, an explicit reference to a classical image reinterpreted through a contemporary material to give absolute continuity to the surface. After Strappo, Silenzio and Soffio research continues for antoniolupi on the theme of integration between sink and wall, on the ability to give continuity to the vertical surface in order to describe a basin that welcomes water in a fluid and enveloping space.

With Calice, the traditional sink is developed with elegance and sleekness for a collection that can once again thrill. The balance of the volumes, the depths of the column and basin, the perfect connection between the parts. A project of harmony and dialogue between the elements, a set of absolute joints and calibrated curves, a comparison between natural and artificial, between organic and architectural design that give birth to a precious object, a Corian glass, which enhances the water that it contains.

Compact yet slender, light and dynamic like a small bird that sits gently or on the contrary is about to take flight. Like a small hummingbird, the Indigo tap carries within itself an energy concentrated in a small area, ready to release itself once the water has been opened.

Made entirely of brass in the new Graphite finish giving elegance and modernism to each piece, Indigo is characterized by its flat spout with a rounded profile and a particular control knob with a sculptural shape. The knob, with an unprecedented cut that dissects the volume and breaks the static nature of geometry, defines the image of the tap and becomes the hallmark of the project.

A sink with clean and essential lines, a regular and rigorous basin preceded by a wide surface that marks a limit and defines an area of respect before entering into direct contact with water. Platò, made of Corian, lives from the integration with a marble top and is embellished by this material perfectly in line with the clear shapes of the project but able to add value in terms of aesthetics, exclusivity and pleasant feel to the touch.

A sort of filter area, a shoreline that marks the limit between the beach and the sea, which invites you to dive in but at the same time offers protection and reassurance before making the gesture.

A wide and articulated program in its simplicity, a series of furniture with a clean and rigorous design that offers multiple possibilities of combinations thanks to the use of very few elements. Atelier, the series of furniture with essential lines designed by Mario Ferrarini, and with a decorative element in the door that enhances the composition.

Available in all wood types and in the full range of antoniolupi lacquered colors, Atelier is a tailored collection, inspired by the company’s DNA, based on a combination of modules in various sizes.

ATELIER SYSTEM

The door is composed of an aluminum profile with a wooden front which, depending on how it is positioned it creates a groove or handle donating a graphic sign to the composition.

The handle can be placed horizontally, totally or partially, with respect to the rest of the furniture, but also placed along the vertical sides or even “frame” the four sides allowing you to customize a domestic microarchitecture and giving depth to the surface.

The sharp lines and the rigorous external geometrical shapes are softened with the fluidness of the internal shape of the basin. Stratos is a mixture of two souls integrated in an elegant and harmonious manner. It’s rigid perimeter expresses safety and solidity protecting an organic interior that extends without interruption.

A sculptural shape, a volume ideally dug from the primordial force of water. Stratos is a washbasin made in Flumood, material patented by antoniolupi, and available in a square or rectangular shape in two different heights (12.5 and 18.8 cm). Stratos can be top mounted or wall mounted. Can be externally lacquered in all colors of our collection.

Ironic in its style and fun for its smart operating mode, attractive in giving a touch of color to any shower space, inviting because it seems like an emergency button to be used only in case of extreme necessity, how many times were we tempted to press one and see what actually would happen?

MAYDAY is the built-in wall mixer tap that takes the shape of an alarm button. That’s the way the interaction with the taps changes. No more lever up to let the water flow, but a button to pull and push. The movement transforms the tap’s function itself. The shape evolves according with its use. Registered model and design, patent pending.

water and air live together in perfect harmony

A perfect cylinder, compact, essential, precise, an image that is the perfect synthesis of technology and design:

AZIMUT is the ceiling and wall showerhead in stainless steel and black Delrin with a special rotation which is the heart of the project. A technical detail that becomes aesthetic, a peculiarity that makes the difference, a concept that puts an evolved functionality first. The hinge allows the showerhead to rotate and then direct the jet more than 180°.

A bathtub able to take center stage but also to be set aside against a wall, an enveloping volume with an egg shape that ergonomically protects the body. Eclipse is a refined interpretation of an organic style, a contemporary expression of relaxation, an image of design embellished today by the new version made of Carrara marble. A monolithic form well defined in every detail, a complete project that in addition to giving identity to space, investigates the functional aspects related to relaxation thanks to a sophisticated shelf perfectly integrated into the edge.

A technical detail that becomes aesthetic, an identifying sign that defines the overall image of the bath. To the pure whiteness and soft lines is added a new version made of Carrara marble that introduces a language made of natural signs and textures which allow it to be inserted in different contexts. From the contemporary bathroom to a context of style. Eclipse in the marble version takes on the role of absolute protagonist of any composition, unique around which to build a personalized scene. Eclipse wants to always be different while remaining itself.

A play on the relationship between solid and null, highlighting the importance of absence expressed through a perimeter that makes volume, stemming from the strength of the shadow drawn on the wall that breaks through the surface becoming a useful and elegant container: Ombra is an accessory obtained from a collection of painted aluminum profiles that allows you to create an empty space used for the positioning of all objects and accessories that can fit in the bathroom.

A small functional niche that can also be illuminated, a small domestic stage for everyday rituals. Lacquered metal rods and the trays in Flumood are placed inside the space to customize your needs. The compartment can take on the same color of the wall or emphasize depth for a more dramatic effect. Ombra is especially configured as a valid aid to the designer in the architectural resolution of accessorizing. The system has in fact a tailor vocation: in addition to the standard measures it will be possible in custom lengths.

Aluminum hydroxide and synthetic resins a result of the antoniolupi research, the company proposes after two years of experimentation, Quarzomood®. The great resistance, due to the addition of quartz, allows for new colors. The company has developed three different colors, Serena, Terra and Seta, which allow refined combinations of iintegrated surfaces and sinks, both with the new furniture finishes and with the lacquered and uniform versions.

Extremely resistant, easy to clean, easily restored in case of scratches, burns or wear and tear of everyday use, Quarzomood® maintains its characteristics unchanged over time and represents another step towards the search for perfection that characterizes all the company’s products.

Essential and rigorous, capable of totally disappearing from sight when it is not in function and reappears magically once turned on. Lucente is a lamp made of a crisp and minimal bar that, thanks to its mirrored front cover, perfectly hides itself in the mirror.

Equipped with direct and indirect led lighting, it can assume the same width as the mirror for a truly complete integration. Double lighting allows you to create an atmospheric light at the top and perfectly illuminate the mirror below. A minimal solution where light and reflections are protagonist.
